Colorado Division of Mines and Geology
The objective of this project was to provide digital GIS files of a substantial number of abandoned mines in the state of Colorado . This data would be used by miners, geologists, contractors and other entities to safely plan and route around these abandoned mine shafts. This data was also used for land reclamation.
Digital Data Services, Inc obtained over 200 oversized historical paper maps from the Colorado Division of Mines and Geology. The documents were scanned on our large format scanner and georeferenced into a known coordinate system using either coordinates specified on the maps, or by pinning down to identifiable features. The georeferenced images were then digitized into vector coverages and attributed for GIS systems. Attributes included; mine names, well numbers, and coal seams designations.

DDS, Inc. was tasked to visit the Tonkin Springs mine site and inventory historic paper maps and digital data, along with consultation on merging this information within a current GIS application.
Digital Data Services, Inc did an onsite assessment of the hard-copy documents, which included the discovery of an outdated cataloging system of the archived paper maps. These maps were cataloged on paper index cards, of which DDS obtained and converted into a database with a user-friendly interface. The database contained fields of which the archive manager (or librarian) could log-in any future documents, for easy retrieval. DDS, Inc. also brought back several dozen maps to be scanned and georeferenced into a GIS system. A metadata template was created for US Gold for any future GIS work, which would provide a link to the archived paper maps.
